Website Content Design Tips

Having great design for your company’s website plays an important part in your user’s overall experience. Good design can increase trust, while poor design can decrease it and compel visitors to leave. In general, design plays a significant role in your overall web marketing picture.

Below are a few design tips to ensure your website’s design doesn’t overshadow and decrease the value of your content:

Website Content Design includes Images and Videos

Having high quality, photos on your website can really add to the aesthetics of it. However, crowding your site with graphics can make it look very unprofessional.

Try to have just one or two carefully chosen images per page. If your article is really long you can have one or two more, but try to avoid having images too close to one another.

Make sure any photos on your website are crisp, taken with a high quality camera. They also need to be relevant to the content. Try to have to color corrected before publishing, so the colors and contrast really stand out.

Want extra credit or Extra Google juice? Add a YouTube video to your pages and posts. We’re not talking about those irritatingly cute cat vids (unless your veterinarian or selling cat stuff). Add videos that allow you go into more detail about your idea, your product, your service, etc… Videos add the EXTRA element(s) of face language, tone inflection, etc… Video provides better control of frame or reference. We could go and on about the importance of video but that’s another post.

One last thing about photos and videos on your website. Don’t forget to completely fill out the raw image and video file properties. Remember, search engines don’t pics and vids like you and I see them Search engines only see code and forgetting to fill out your pic and vid file properties may not hurt you but it definitely won’t help you. Take the extra minute or so and enter your data.

Use a Stellar Header Graphic

Your header graphic is one of the most important elements and significantly impacts what your website looks like. After all, it’ll be on the top of every page visitors go to, affecting their overall experience (consciously or subconsciously).

If you’re not a professional designer and you’re doing your website yourself, this is perhaps one area where you should consider investing in the skills and talents of a graphic artist. Hire someone professional to get it right and do it for you.

Your header graphic should contain just one or two graphical elements and just one or two text elements. The text elements and the graphic elements can’t both be too loud, or they’ll clash with one another or detract from the overall content.

Use a Coordinated Color Scheme

Your site overall will generally look better with sound color scheme. Use complimentary colors or adjacent colors on the color wheel in your design colors.

Avoid colors schemes that clash or have one color standing out too much. The goal of your design shouldn’t be to bring attention to your design, but to create a positive framework for visitors to consume your content.
These are a few of the most important elements to designing websites that look good and make people want to stick around longer.
